The Eastern legend of the miraculous image is associated with the sick king of Edessa: after the artist sent by him failed to depict Christ, the Savior washed his face, wiped it with a cloth (ubrus), on which an imprint remained, and handed it to the artist. The servant gave the image to the king, and he was healed. Abgar placed the cloth in a niche above the gate for public worship, but during the persecutions it had to be walled up for safekeeping, and the relic was forgotten for several centuries.

Gold plating is 5 microns thick- more than double that of most gold plated jewellery.
